Quartz is the predominant mineral in the earth’s surface layers. Large deposits are found in places such as Brazil, Madagascar and the United States.
There are many different varieties of quartz, such as clear/milky quartz, rose quartz and amethyst. Most are not crystalline but occur as massive rock.
The largest singular deposit of quartz is a network of inter-connected crystal veins, located in the Ouachita Mountains in the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma (USA). Here, crystals of particularly fine quality are recovered and sought after by collectors from all over the world.
There are several mines in Western Arkansas where you can dig for your very own clear Quartz Crystals. For a certain daily fee, you get to dig in the actual mine or in the mine tailings and keep whatever you find.
